HEALTH: 6 Top Foods For Your Eyes

June 30, 2012 / by / 18 Comments

We’ve got a pretty serious problem here in the U.S. when it comes to our eyes. Estimates suggest that 21 million Americans have some sort of functional vision problem or eye condition, and vision loss is among the top 10 disabilities in adults in the U.S. While some problems are more serious and not preventable, there are things that can be done to promote good, general eye health, and eating well is one of them. Studies have suggested that getting a high dose of nutrients like lutein, Omega 3 fatty acids and lycopene can help lower your risk of developing macular degeneration by up to 25 percent. And experts say the potential benefits don’t stop there. “Eating well affects the entire body,” said Judy Caplan, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “The same foods that have a preventive effect on the eyes will also positively affect other body systems. Everything works synergistically.” Here are six of the best foods for promoting eye health.   Kale, Spinach And Collards Lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants that protect and maintain healthy cells — and they’re abundant in these dark, leafy greens, Caplan explains. She quotes The American Optometric Association, which has reportedly …

Lauryn Hill Facing Prison Time For Taxes

June 30, 2012 / by / 576 Comments

After failing to file tax returns from 2005-2007, Lauryn Hill is now facing the legal music. The former Fugee has plead guilty to tax evasion and is now facing a $75,000 fine and three years of jail time…one for each year of evasion. According to TMZ, Hill faced a judge this morning (June 29) and admitted that she “intentionally and willingly” failed to file the returns. Now, she’ll face a potential prison sentence at a hearing set for November. After the appearance, Hill was released on $150,000 bail. When the news of her hefty tax bill broke earlier this month, Hill claimed that she had completely removed herself from both family and society during that three year period. “For the past several years, I have remained what others would consider underground,” she wrote in an open letter. “I kept my life relatively simple, even after huge successes,” she continued. “But it became increasingly obvious that certain indulgences and privileges were expected to come at the expense of my free soul, free mind and therefore my health and integrity.” Hill still owes taxes on more than $1.8 million of income earned from 2005-2007. FREAKY FRIDAY: Why Women Moan During Sex…

June 29, 2012 / by / 316 Comments

All you have to do is watch nearly any depiction of female orgasm on screen to get an idea of how a woman is “supposed” to react during sex. From “When Harry Met Sally” to “Sex and the City” to your basic porn film, women in the throes of passion aren’t just shouting their ecstasy from the rooftops – they’re moaning with pleasure. Loudly. But is this just cinematic license, or is there really something to noisy sex? Experts wondered the same thing. Last year, Gayle Brewer of the University of Central Lancashire and Colin Hendrie of the University of Leeds published their research on the topic – technically known as “copulatory vocalization” – in the Archives of Sexual Behavior. In the study, they asked 71 sexually active heterosexual women between ages 18 and 48 for more details about vocalization during sex. The researchers found that many of the women did make noise, but not necessarily while they were having an orgasm. Instead, 66% said that they moaned to speed up their partner’s climax, and 87% stated that they vocalized during sex to boost his self-esteem. Are female orgasms really just a ‘bonus’? “While female orgasms were most commonly experienced …

It’s Hot Outside! 8 Tips To Beat The Heat!

June 29, 2012 / by / 802 Comments

Hundreds of record high temperatures have baked the United States this week. On Wednesday this massive heat wave pushes east! Temperatures will reach dangerous levels in cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Houston, Philadelphia and many more. Look for highs to climb into the mid- to upper 90s and even triple digits. Plus, there’s still no relief for the scorching West and Plains states. With this dangerous heat in the forecast, here are some safety tips from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to keep cool: Slow down. Reduce, eliminate or reschedule strenuous activities until the coolest time of the day. Children, seniors and anyone with health problems should stay in the coolest available place, not necessarily indoors. Dress for summer. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect heat and sunlight. Put less fuel on your inner fires. Foods, like meat and other proteins that increase metabolic heat production, also increase water loss. Drink plenty of water, non-alcoholic and decaffeinated fluids. Your body needs water to keep cool. Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty. Persons who have epilepsy or heart, kidney or liver disease, are on fluid-restrictive diets or have a problem with fluid retention should consult a physician before increasing their consumption of fluids.  …

SUPREME COURT RULES IN FAVOR OF OBAMACARE!! So What Now?

June 28, 2012 / by / 535 Comments

The Supreme Court ruling to uphold the core of President Barack Obama’s 2010 health-care law has wide-ranging political and economic implications. Here is a snap analysis of what it means for Americans, health-care providers, insurers, the law and the presidential campaign. How does the ruling affect the average American? Working families with annual household incomes up to nearly $90,000 will be able to purchase private insurance through new state insurance markets at prices subsidized according to income level, beginning in 2014. But people with household incomes of around $29,000, who qualify for coverage under the Medicaidgovernment health insurance program for the poor , may have to wait for their respective state governments to decide whether they will join the program’s huge expansion. Preventive health-care measures including mammograms and other cancer screenings will be available without deductibles or co-pays. Adult children up to age 26 can remain on their parents’ health insurance plans. Senior citizens can expect to continue receiving discounts on prescription drugs aimed at closing the Medicare coverage gap known as the “doughnut hole.” Health insurers will continue to pay rebates on premiums not sufficiently targeted at health-care services. Beginning in 2014, insurers will no longer be able to …
