YUM: District Taco, The New Mexican Food Jefe

October 10, 2012 / by / 39 Comments

Chipotle What? Chipotle Who? There is a new champ in town by the name of District Taco. I found out about it because of its proximity to my job, and upon my first bite, it became my new favorite. District Taco started as a dream between two neighbors to create homemade Yucatan style food with all organic ingredients. Made fresh, in store everyday. The team started with a food truck that grew into two locations. There are two District Taco locations. One is located 5723 Lee Highway Arlington, VA and the other is at 1309 F St NW (downtown DC). The locations are decorated in an urban Mexican style. When you have ordered your food the cashier will hand you two things. One is a frequent buyer card where after ten purchases you can receive a free taco, and another is a card with a number on it that teaches you a word in Spanish while you wait. The menu at District Taco exposes Chipotle’s ‘Mexican Grill’ as a fraudulent Mexican-American food. The menu consists of Taco’s for 2.25/each, Burritos, Salads, Quesadillas, Nachos, Marinated shrimp and fish tacos. All of these options combined with their unlimited toppings option make District …

YUM: 10 Ways to Eat a Potato (and Just a Potato) for Dinner

September 26, 2012 / by / 0 Comment

It’s going to involve a little more than butter and sour cream. But making a baked (or sweet) potato a meal is an easy, satisfying way to solve dinner. We don’t do it nearly enough. Most of these meals have some sort of protein, whether from meat or cheese, to keep everything balanced. But in essence, a potato can be a vehicle for almost any sort of dish–a staple just like brown rice or pasta.   Here are 10 yummy meals we’d recommend: • 1. Last night’s leftovers. Got some flank steak left over from fajitas? A little stir fry? Spoon it on top of a baked potato and drizzle on some sauce to add moisture. Almost anything goes. • 2. Shredded chicken and spiked yogurt or sour cream. Take a handful of shredded rotisserie chicken (or leftovers; see above) and add some sour cream mixed with seasonings. Garlic powder, chili powder, smoked paprika all work. Sprinkle on some parsley for color. • 3. Chili or stew. If you made a huge batch of chili and are getting tired of eating it day after day, this is one way to mix things up. • 4. Black beans, avocado, and salsa. …

DC’S VEGAN ‘CLUTCH SPOTS’

September 24, 2012 / by / 25 Comments

Sometimes finding Vegan spots can be difficult, finding a vegan spot that has GREAT food can be even harder! So we took the time to narrow down some of the best vegan spots that DC has to offer! Happy eating!   5. PETE’S PIZZA-Pete’s pizza has one of the best vegan pizzas that I have eaten in the District. The slices and wholes are both pricey but the quality of their ingredients speak for themselves. They use vegan cheese called DAIYA to create a perfect substitute for cheese on pizzas. Many of my friends who are carnivores cannot even tell the difference between the two. RECOMMENDED DISH: Vegan Pizza : 14”- $16 16” – 21 4. STICKY FINGERS-I first found out about sticky fingers from a dear friend’s mom. She purchased some of their mock chicken sandwiches and gave me one. It was scary how much the bean curd resembled actual chicken, then after tasting it I refused to eat it because I honestly believed it was chicken. Sticky fingers was started by Doron Petersan and is famous for its sweets, especially its cupcakes. Sticky fingers products are all 100% vegan with cane sugar sweeteners and numerous soy and bean products. …

HAPPY HOUR: Octoberfest Beer Milkshake

September 14, 2012 / by / 9 Comments

What says ‘Oktoberfest’ better than a beer? Well, according to the Red Robin burger chain, Oktoberfest means the launch of a hopped-up dessert in the form of a Samuel Adams Octoberfest Milkshake. The new 21 and over milkshake is made with creamy soft serve ice cream, Samuel Adams Octoberfest draft, vanilla and caramel. While the idea of a ‘beer milkshake’ isn’t exceptionally groundbreaking, it is noteworthy when it comes from a chain restaurant with Red Robin’s reach. The shake is part of an Octoberfest menu that will run through November 11. SOURCE
