My American Dream Sounds Like Nina Simone

July 10, 2012 / by / 152 Comments

UPenn professor Salamishah Tillet contributed a brilliantly written piece to NPR’s music blog on the indelible Nina Simone. Tillet guides readers through history, pointing out the copious ways in which Simone continues to not only influence music, but American culture at large. I discovered Nina Simone through the back door. I would like to claim that I grew up on her classic songs, like “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” “Four Women” and “Mississippi Goddam.” But I didn’t. Like so many of my generation, I found her through hip-hop loops and samples. Beginning in 1996 with Fugees member Lauryn Hill‘s famous reference on “Ready or Not,” I followed Simone’s voice as hip-hop artists invoked her. And she was everywhere, from Mos Def‘s indicting “Rock N Roll” to Kanye West‘s insistent sampling of her voice and piano riffs on all but two of his albums, to the cover of “I Wish I Knew How It Feels to Be Free” by John Legend and The Roots on their 2011 Wake Up! album and of course Jennifer Hudson belting “Feeling Good” in Weight Watchers ads. Artists as wide ranging as Alicia Keys, Antony and The Johnsons, Lil Wayne, Adele and Michael Buble find inspiration …

EDITOR’S NOTE: Random Acts Of Kindness

May 16, 2012 / by / 0 Comment

Hmmm. I’ve often wondered what my 1st editorial contribution to my site would be about. I knew that when the time came, I wanted to put thought behind whatever the subject would be… seeing as how it would be a ‘Statement piece’ in a sense of the word. So it’s not something I really wanted to rush into.Well… early this morning the inspiration finally crept its sneaky-self  into fruition. On my way to the office… I loaded into a super packed rush hour train. One that Eastcoast commuters know all to well. As I inched my way into the sardine can (Standing room only crowded).. I overheard a woman say “Must be some type of oil or something”… Of course I assumed someone left a gross residue in one of the seats… Something we all cringe at… esp the Metro transit passengers. I glance over my shoulder… through the little bit of eye space I can make out through the sea of people. To see an elderly black woman glancing down at the stained seat. The woman’s voice I heard belonged to a middle aged, sandy brown haired Caucasian woman who was seated next to the empty seat which bared …

This past weekend, I was invited to speak to a group of students at my Alma Mater, Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI. It was such a humbling experience and as I was sharing advice and answering the eager students questions… It was an irony of sorts. I was teaching them…and they were inadvertently teaching me. I was asked about everything from my experiences, my likes, dislikes, advice, being a young business owner and most importantly my goals! Thank you to the lovely students, The University and Aijalon Wallace for the invite. Go Eagles!

HISTORIC HOWARD THEATER RE-OPENED W/ WALE PERFORMANCE

April 11, 2012 / by / 0 Comment

BY: Bria Freeman “Wale, Wale, Wale, Wale, Wale.” The anxious crowd chanted the young rapper’s stage name as they waited for him to appear on the stage of The Howard Theatre. Once a great place to go and see the most relevant artist during the early 1900’s, when it was established; the Howard Theatre was now back in full swing. During its prime time it hosted famous artists such as Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne and Sammy Davis Jr. This great establishment was shut down in 1970, restored, and then shut down again in 1980. With the help of the Howard Theatre Restoration (HTR), a non-profit organization, and other private entities the Howard Theatre was able to be revitalized on April 9, 2012. Thirty-two years later, on the very stage that musical legends, who paved the way, once performed on; a legend in the making performed. As the curtain rose so did the cheers and a great performance followed. As you scanned the enormous crowd you could see phones in the air taking videos and smiles on everyone’s faces. Wale did an amazing job at captivating his audience’s attention and keeping it during his whole performance. There was never …
