We found Love in a Hopeless Cyber-Place…

November 26, 2012 / by / 155 Comments

In, what I’m sure, comes as a shock to nobody paying attention: dating people from the Internet is the future. (Hell, it’s the present.) The days of stranger danger and creepy perverts on AOL chat are… well, still there, minus AOL chat, but largely dismissed as social media has grown into an unstoppable monster deluding people into thinking they’re special. With this–and every type of dating site you can imagine–comes the skyrocketing of online hook ups. Now, we could look at this as glass half-empty and go into a hyperbolic fit about how this is the ultimate death knell for courtship and the “old fashioned way” that got your parents together but honestly, I’m already looking at damn near everything in my life as half-empty, let’s do this shit half-full. Here’s the good news kids: you’re way more interesting online than you ever are in real life–trust me, it’s true.  The Internet has a way of making even the lowliest of nerds who spend all day complaining on message boards about gaffes on last night’s “Parks & Rec” and writing “Breaking Bad” fanfic in their parent’s basement seem like the suavest of gentlemen with the right work. Vonnegut said it …

Selling Wine – The Wine Retailer

November 04, 2012 / by / 218 Comments

Anyone who has ever designed food and beverage packaging knows how difficult it is to stand out in the crowded sameness of food stores. This difficulty is magnified in the wine category. You must, in essence, express the wine’s distinctive qualities in the tiny space of the label, the cap, and perhaps some carton or POS applications. To make matters worse, various laws and regulations require that much of the label space is taken up by small print. There is also very little cost-effective wiggle room in the basic package: the bottle. Bottles are universally more or less the same, and the sameness is dictated by standardized manufacturing, transportation, storage and displays. Wine quality plays a major role in this as well, as does consumer perception. Wine that comes out of a box or a plastic container just doesn’t feel quite right. In the retail selling environment, education and information now also demand their share of space as more and more novices want to know about wine. For the wine retailer, and for the designer of spaces where wine is sold, all of this poses a challenge: How to display hundreds of seemingly similar bottles in an attractive, interesting and functionally effective way. …

HAPPY HOUR: Election Night Drink Recipe: El Presidente Cocktail

November 04, 2012 / by / 170 Comments

It goes without saying if you regularly read this column you like to mix up drinks for most any occasion, so why not one for election night? Perhaps you waited until the last minute to decide how you’ll cast your ballot and need a sip for pondering, or maybe you just want to toast the fact that the whole thing is finally over. Either way the El Presidente cocktail is the perfect pick for this week’s happy hour. The history of this drink dates back to heyday of Old Havana when Americans under Prohibition went in search of rum and some fun in the sun. A jaunt down to Cuba delivered a dose of both. The name itself and the fact that it’s delicious, makes it ideal for any election night party, or a simple toast to your candidate of choice. So get to stirring for a very happy happy hour in ten minutes time. Other options for election night: • If rum isn’t on the bar how about an Americano? • Or choose one from the great American cocktail crawl to toast. El Presidente Cocktail Makes 1 drink1 ounce light rum 1 ounce dry vermouth 1 teaspoon grenadine 1 teaspoon curaçao Twist of …

Tricks & Treats: Halloween Party Ideas

October 28, 2012 / by / 115 Comments

I don’t know about you, but Halloween is my favorite holiday for parties! Interactive and silly or elegant and spooky, Halloween parties can go in so many different directions — it’s a party planner’s dream. Here are a few great ideas to help make your party a definite treat!   1. How stylish are these chevron pumpkins! I love these geometrically painted pumpkins, especially in a pretty cluster in the foyer of your home or apartment. What an inviting way to set the tone for a modern Halloween party. From Country Living. 2. Caramel apple sundaes? Yes, please! Top off your party with a festive treat. Here’s a quick hint of my own: sprinkle some gray salt on top — perfection! FromMartha Stewart. 3. Another great pumpkin decorating idea from Country Living: carve pumpkins in the shape of a wood-burning fire, and place them inside of an empty fireplace: lovely and clever. Add a few candles for effect, but be careful of long, wispy Halloween costumes! 4. No bones about it! Check out these great bone cookie and glittery blood Halloween party invitations from Design Sponge. I never though bones could look so tasty… 5. For the crafty among us, these embroidered pumpkins could make a party in themselves. Gather …
